LSG works with leading edge medical tubing suppliers to source NiTi tubing in the correct stoichiometry and size. Using NiTi tubling for an actuation source also requires sufficient cold work in order to stabilize the two-way shape memory effect. We work to ensure that incoming tube stock has the properties which make SMA actuators successful.

Let's face it, having a SMA torque tube is not sufficient if it lacks a reliable interface to transmit the torque. LSG can fabricate a zero backlash spline interface to transmit the torque. The spline interface allows for future disassembly. We also fabricate mating components.

Training is the repeated thermal cycling between martensite and austenite phases while under mechanical stress. The strain achieved during the phase transformation changes from one thermal cycle to the next. We continue thermal cycling the tube until the strains at austenite and martensite are sufficiently stable.

After training, we characterize the tube element's performance when subjected to various torsional loads. This is often described in terms of the maximum shear stress that the NiTi is subjected to.

Traceability of tube elements is critical. We laser mark a unique serial number on each tube. This allows us to trace the history of each tube back to the tube stock supplier's lot number.
